Working Bee Riwaka Valley 2020

SATURDAY 21st March

Pest vine control around Abel Tasman National Park

Meet at the Moss Scenic Reserve, Riwaka Valley Road off State Highway 60, Riwaka

SATURDAY 21st March (If wet Saturday 28th March)

Meet at 9:30am

Drive through Riwaka (if coming from Motueka) continue along State Highway 60, turn left onto Riwaka Valley Road, off the main road up to the start of the Takaka hill, just before the traffic lights. Drive up Riwaka Valley Road for about 3 kms. We will assemble at the Moss Scenic Reserve car park.

Finish about 1pm.

Aurora August has plenty of old man’s beard vines to cut at this earlier Riwaka working bee.

This is the seventh working bee of the Riwaka to Marahau phase of Project De-Vine’s work. We will work on the DOC reserve. There are many Old man’s beard or Banana passion vines on this reserve. DOC are keen to get on top of the vines and by giving this area a big hit now, it will knock the re-seeding to the area around, save them a lot of time and show the landowners in this area what can be done in a few hours. They will have two of their staff to work with you and learn how we deal with the vines. Members of our experienced weedteam will show how to effectively cut and paste the vines. Bottles of gel are supplied and are free for you to take to use on your own property. This is a great chance for the many landowners in this area to meet and work with us, as we will be visiting many properties over the next three years as contractors for the DOC Community Fund grant that Tasman Environmental Trust is administering.

It does not matter how much you know as you will be teamed up with those that know the pest vines. The reserve is easy to walk around on, with occasional scrambles & maybe a few climbs for those so inclined!

Please bring sturdy shoes, gloves & secateurs, loppers or retractable hand saws (best – if you have one) for the big ones.

Please bring your own water. Snacks will be provided at the tea break with some cool drink options.

The more folk can help the better, as there are plenty of vines to share around, anyone over 16 can learn how to cut and paste the vines. Younger children, 12 years and up, can help to locate the stems.

Looking forward to seeing you there.

Our other sponsors are Nelson Building Society, Motueka Community Board, Landcare Trust and the suppliers of the Glyphosate bottles: Cut’n’Paste based on Waiheke Island.
